Historic MandarinAlthough miles from the city's center, the Mandarin community has a rich history and has played a key role in the city's development.

In the 1800s, Mandarin was a farming village where oranges, grapefruit, lemons and other fruits and vegetables were shipped to Jacksonville and points north via steamships traveling on the St. Johns River. Acclaimed author Harriet Beecher Stowe wintered in Mandarin from 1867 to 1884. While here, she described the region as "a tropical paradise".
